To the Moon

I bought this game on steam on Christmas holiday, though I just got the time to finish it just a few days ago. The gameplay was simple, the reading was enjoyable, the plot was amazing, and the game overall just leave a special mark on my mind and heart.

What makes this game more special is the soundtrack. Just love those songs wrecking your mind and destroying every part of your heart cells. Welp.
This post contains spoilers btw. Read after you've played the game!

Alright, so, this game at first shows you some light comedy stuff which will make you think, "Wow, I'm going to enjoy this game so much". But no. Hah. Not a chance. I too expected that Dr. Neil will always keep the moments lively, but there are some moments in which I just want to punch him straight in the face (no kidding)

After 30 - 40 minutes in the game, you will realize that this game's story is actually pretty depressing. I know that this 'machine' will help some dying people to achieve things which they always hoped. But to do that, the 'machine' too need to alter the person's memory, which means that the person wont have any memory of their actual life whatsoever, they died with the memory of a life they never had.

Eva's and Neil's client is a guy named Johny, who wants to go to the moon. Why so? He admitted that he doesn't know. He just do. After wandering around in John's memories, both Eva and Neil soon find out that their task wont be as easy as they expected it to be. John has a rather complicated life because of two things, River and his dead twin brother which was erased from his mind due to a certain medicine he took.

River died just a few moments before the story line in the game started. She died because she refused treatment and forced Johny to use the money to focus on building their house next to a lighthouse, Anya. River believed that the lighthouses lived a lonely life because they are so far from each other and so she wanted to at least befriend one of them.

If you have played the game, you must have known that just a bit before she died, she folded a lot of rabbits made from origami papers. Johny never knew why River did that. I too didn't exactly understand why, but after some time of brain storming and reading the game's discussions, I found out that River actually has Asperger.

People with Asperger tends to have difficulties on sharing what they have in mind, and River too, of course has this symptom. Johny already explained to her that he wanted 'someone different' so that's why he got into River. Because of this, River found out that Johny forgot about their first meeting in the carnival. (Johny forgets that because of the same medicine which made him forgot about his dead twin brother). In their first meeting, they made a bunny constellation out of the stars and the moon as its belly and they promised each other that if they ever got lost, they'll meet again on the moon.

Because of her lack of abilities to communicate, River tried to remind Johny about this by folding a lot of paper rabbits, though Johny never understands what River was trying to say. She even made one with blue ears, hands, and foot and then its belly with yellow paper. Blue is to present the sky while yellow is to present the moon. But still, Johny didn't understand.

Eva was the one who made Johny's wish come true, though Neil opposed it because he thought that Eva was trying to erase River. In the end Johny and River both made it to NASA and met each other, fell in love, and a few years later they finally made it and went to the moon together.

I cried.

What I find ironic in this game is that, like what I said before, Johny died with an altered memory. Though yes, they have a better life in this alternate version of Johny's memory, but still... it's... ironic. River died without having this memory too, River probably died with regret and sadness because Johny couldn't remember the moment which she could. But Johny, on the other hand, died happily with the 'River' that he didn't actually know.

That's just... sad, y'know? Dammit.

SO yeah, that's all I gotta say. What actually this post is? Probably a review. Half a review? But damn, I just hope Freebird Games (Kan Gao wooow!) finished their next game after 'The Bird Story' and explain why Neil gotta take some painkillers.

That's it folks. Imma bounce. C'ya later

-Best Regards
